Cooperation for the development of a smart exoskeleton
A Polish-Turkish consortium involving Łukasiewicz – PIAP is working on an exoskeleton for remote rehabilitation. A co-op meeting was held in late October and early November 2024.
From 29 October to 1 November 2024, Krzysztof Zawalski and Piotr Falkowski from the Biorobotics and Medical Devices Section of Łukasiewicz – PIAP participated in the interim meeting of the Polish-Turkish project consortium “SmartEx-Twin – smart exoskeleton for remote rehabilitation using digital twin technology”. During four intensive days of work, technological trials of remote operation of the rehabilitation exoskeleton and experiments investigating the effects of data transfer speed and connection loss on system performance were carried out between the Polish and the Turkish sites. The team was remotely supported by Kajetan Jeznach, Jan Oleksiuk and Piotr Kołodziejski.
On the following days, the Turkish partners presented their research progress and the infrastructure used at Yıldız University of Technology and the TÜSEB Institute. As part of the dissemination of the project, the consortium members attended an international event organised by Cybernicx, where the professor involved in the project Erhan Akdoğan talked about the future of medical robotics. Behind the scenes, however, there were discussions about remote operation and the use of EEG for robot control, including the example of the SmartEx-Twin project. Representatives of Turkish hospitals were particularly interested in the results of the project.
On the last day of the consortium meeting, discussions were organised about the human trials planned from November, the further dissemination and publication of the research results and the continuation of the project to commercialise the results. An event at Łukasiewicz-PIAP is planned for June 2025 with speeches by international experts in the field of medical robotics and medicine, combined with a workshop to demonstrate the full operation of the SmartEx-Twin system.
The project (POLTUR5/2022/81/SmartEx-Twin/2023) is funded by the National Centre for Research and Development under the 5th Polish-Turkish Cooperation Competition.
